President Biden establishes Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument

July 25, 2023 – Emmett Till, a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, along with mother Mamie Till-Mobley was memorialized on Tuesday by President Joe Biden.

In this Indian Treaty Room with this many people of color, holding powerful offices changed the direction of this country. It would have been beyond our comprehension. And we’re just getting started!

Joe Biden, 46th U.S. President

On the day when this proclamation was signed, it would have been Till’s 82nd birthday. According to the proclamation signed by the President, Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley’s National Monument will be created in Chicago, Sumner and outside of Glendora. These locations are throughout US states Illinois and Mississippi, which are considered the central point of Till’s murder and the start of the US-wide movement.

Emmett Till was just 14 years old when he was brutally murdered in Mississippi for allegedly whistling at a white woman. The perpetrators of this horrendous crime were found not guilty by a jury made up entirely of white people, which infuriated the public and exposed the pervasive racial unfairness of the Jim Crow era. The open casket of the 14-year-old and the unfair trail grabbed widespread attention, highlighting the atrocities of racism and ignited the Civil Rights Movement.
